This story is on a pretty interesting App for the iPhone that may save you from leaving it somewhere.

1. I chose this story mainly because it was funny but also because everyone has an iPhone these days. This App could come in pretty handy for those out partying (or the plain forgetful) and don't want to risk forgetting their phone somewhere. Just turn on the App and it sets off an alarm for a set distance away from your phone you get, reminding you that you left it behind.

2. Novelty is the main news value. Its just a funny/cool App. Proximity is also a news value in the story because everyone has an iPhone or some smart phone now. If your phone can dowload this App, then it could affect your life (or just your night life) for the better!

3. The unanswered questions are addressed in the story as ways to develope the App.

4. The lead is pretty good. Its funny and light-hearted, like the story, and sums up what it will be talking about.

Live streamed royal wedding reigns on the Web

Live streamed royal wedding reigns on the Web

Published: Friday, April 29, 2011 at 5:19 p.m.
Last Modified: Friday, April 29, 2011 at 5:19 p.m.

NEW YORK - Prince William and Kate Middleton may have had a traditional wedding, but the Internet traffic that accompanied the ceremony was something very new for the royal family.

Millions followed the affair in live streams on their computers, all the while commenting on social media sites. Among the many outlets webcasting the event was the royal family itself, whose YouTube page offered live video and tweets from Clarence House, the prince's official residence.

Akamai Technologies Inc., which delivers about 20 percent of the world's Internet traffic, said that global page views for the roughly 100 news portals for which it delivers content peaked at nearly 5.4 million a minute Friday morning. That was good enough for the sixth largest amount of traffic ever, but well shy of the record of 10.4 million page views a minute set last June 24 during the 2010 World Cup.

Still, those numbers were very high considering that the wedding was so ubiquitous on TV and that it occurred (unlike the World Cup record day) when many people in North American and the United Kingdom were not at work, where computer-viewing is often a necessity. Friday was a national holiday for the U.K., and the ceremony took place early morning in the U.S.

There was some evidence, though, that the wedding may have been live-streamed in record numbers. Because it was streamed on so many outlets, a total figure was hard to come by. Akamai said that based on the approximately 25 broadcasters for which it delivered streams, the highest viewer count exceeded that of the World Cup traffic it supported.

Livestream, which partnered with The Associated Press, UK Press Association, CBS and Entertainment Tonight for its live stream, said it surpassed its own record with, at one point, more than 300,000 concurrent live streams.

Yahoo said it experienced its largest traffic for a live video event, surpassing its audience for Michael Jackson's funeral by 21 percent.

The royal wedding was streamed by, among others, CNN.com, NBC's "Today Show" website and Fox (by way of Hulu). ABC streamed its coverage on Hulu and on Yahoo. CBS, PBS and ET also streamed the event on Ustream. E! streamed its coverage on Facebook.

Facebook said that more than 6.8 million people globally commented on the wedding through public status updates within the past 24 hours, as of Friday afternoon. On the social media site in the U.K., David Beckham's arrival prompted one of the largest surges in discussion with 9,000 mentions of his name in 20 minutes.

All the traffic caused some problems.

Web performance site AlertSite monitored 15 sites during the wedding. It found that while YouTube's homepage had 100 percent availability, the Royal wedding channel had 74 percent availability and slower response time. The highest amount of response time, of the sites surveyed by AlertSite, came from AccessHollywood.com, ABCNews.com and BBC.com.

The BBC said in a statement that it was "experiencing some technical issues with BBC Online due to the sheer weight of traffic which may cause the site to be slower than normal in some cases."

The wedding day online audience was a culmination of rising Web traffic. There were 2.1 million tweets about the wedding over the last week. Google said that in the month of April, searches for "royal wedding" increased 90 percent. On April 25, searches on Google for "Kate Middleton" overtook those for "Lady Gaga." And on eBay, some 3,000 items related to the wedding were sold in April.

http://www.timesdaily.com/article/20110429/APA/1104291167/-1/news

I chose this particular story because I feel that it's of interest to the most people. The royal wedding has been highly advertised and so this was a great story that involved this but still pertained to my beat, technology. News values in this story include: Cultural Proximity - The wedding is a big deal to people because it is a large part of someones culture. Everyone likes royalty even if it isn't their own. Reference to Elite Nations: This story refers to the U.K. which is, of course, an elite nation. Reference to Elite Persons: This story refers to royalty, which is the most elite of everyone. Continuity: The stories on this subject have been building and building up to the time of the wedding. This lead works because it includes the details necessary to inform the reader of what they are about to read. A follow up story would of course be how popular videos of the wedding are, how many views, etc.

TVA seeks public input on land use

http://www.timesdaily.com/article/20110426/NEWS/110429856/0/APA

1) I chose this story because I know of a lot of people, including myself, that use the land that TVA owns to hike and enjoy other outdoor activities.

2) News values: Proximity- this is happening right here in the Shoals area. Immediacy- they have to figure out what to do with the land and buildings in May. Impact- this will have an effect of thsoe that use this land for recreational activities and those that live in this area. If the land is sold to the private sector, then we might see construction in this area instead of nature.

3)The Tennessee Valley Authority is more than an electricity-generating utility, which was made plain Monday night as agency representatives gathered public comments for a new Natural Resource Plan. I don't really like this lead, it seems to beat around the bush at the beginning. It tells what has happened, but does not hold interest.

4) A follow up story would be what TVA has decided to do. Questions I had were, what are some of the plans? How likely is it that they will sell off the land?

In Easter Message, Pope urges Diplomacy in Libya

Pope Benedict XVI gave his Easter message at St. Peter's Bascilla to over 100,000 people, directing his urge toward Libya to reach a diplomatic solution over warfare. Also he strongly encouraged European countries to open their doors to refugees from the Middle Eastern countries that are in states of unrest. The rest of the article gives details to what the Catholic Church did for celebrating Easter, and talked about the pope later speaking to Gypsies outside the bascilla.
The lead seems straightfoward with what the topic is, but one could be interested to see the pope's in hte lead and get his view on the war in Libya.
News values in this would include prominence because it involve Pope Benedict XVI and emotions as it leaves readers touched by the compassion of the pope for Libyans and other peoples around the world. http://www.timesdaily.com/article/20110424/API/1104240922

Catching Cheaters

http://www.usatoday.com/news/education/2011-04-05-dcschools05_st_N.htm?loc=interstitialskip
I chose this story because it is awful that teachers are being the ones caught cheating rather than just the students.
This story is about cheating on standardized test, and how to catch cheaters. This article says that educators are being found changing student's test scores, and gives examples of what tampering with the test will look like.
The lead for this story answers all five W's.
The news values for this story are impact and conflict.

Who's Next Skrillex

 http://whatsnext.blogs.cnn.com/2011/03/21/whos-next-skrillex/

1. I chose this story because i like some of this guys work and i like some techno. I haven't personally listened to his remixes before. But i do like this guys style but he does throw a lot of dubstep into his stuff though. He has remixed a lot of hits and made them bigger in the Rave/Dance world at a very young age.

2. It would have to do with Novelty and Prominence. I mean knowing who this guy is going to remix next is not life changing. Or maybe to some it may be.

3. Follow up maybe just a catch up in a year or so but nothing immediate.

4. The lead is actually interesting because i had forgotten who he was myself. It is effective in at least wondering what the article is about. But its not definite unless you know exactly who he is.

Never Ending Tremors

Over the past few months, the world has experienced an increase in earthquakes. Although the quakes seem to be steadily continuing, the amount of magnitude each one packs is random. Some feel as if these quakes are bringing the end of our age, while others show that this is a reoccurring event like thunderstorms. These quakes are packing more increased magnitudes in certain areas that send tremors through out the globe, affecting more than one area. In certain cases, the most recent and publicized quake occurred off the coast of Japan, bringing a tsunami aftershock that nearly cleared the northern part of the country. There is little precaution our globe can take against earthquakes and we can find truth in knowing that they are never going to cease.

Hot pink-toenailed boy in J. Crew ad sparks controversy

This issue is truely bizzare to me. This article is about a recent J.Crew add that features J.Crew president, Jenna Lyons, painting her five-year-old son's toe nails. Innocent enough right? It sparked a HUGE and ridiculous debate among conservatives accusing J.Crew of promoting transgender child raising.

1. I chose this story because I think it is truly ridiculous that this add even got this much attention. In the video with the story, someone says "what year is this?" reacting to how crazy the conservative reaction is. The video also addresses the story of a mom who let her little boy dress up as Daphne from Scooby Doo for Halloween. People accused her of making her son gay. Jenna Lyons is getting the same reaction. The article also talks about how if the roles had been reversed and it was a young girl playing in the mud with trucks, no one would have even cared; which raises another issue in itself.

2. The news values in this story would be novelty and prominence because it has to do with a famous fashion lable.

3. The only questions left unanswered would be follow up from Jenna Lyons, who declined to comment on the issue.

4. I think the lead is very effective. It gets your attention with mentioning the prominent lable J.Crew right off the bat and with the word "transgender"-- a sure attention grabber.

De Lima Sees Violation of Anti-Child Abuse Law by Willie's Show

A Philippine TV game show called 'Willing Willie' and the host, Willie Revillame, were put under criticizing pressure from Secretary Leila de Lima from the Department of Justice for showing a six-year-old boy do a type of dirty dancing for a chance to win money, violating the Anti-Child Abuse Law. Critics complain that Revillame may have forced the boy into dancing in striptease styles while the boy was crying because of dancing in front of a huge basketball player. Revillame has some defense to this by stating that there are several shows that are similar to his that have done the same kind of things and have gone without complaint and the boy's father admitted that the boy had danced like that in school performances. The show was pulled off the air and Revillame is taking a leave of absence.
The lead is just basic as it tells what is going on and who is involved. Perhaps one would have to be a little more familiar with the show or the host to feel compelled to read it.
In some case the story has the value of prominence as it does deal with a TV host in the Philippines, and emotional values as readers can be upset to just hear the idea of a child abuse, but the story also seems immediate as the situation is still under investigation.
I would like to get to the bottom of this case and know the whole truth. I want to know what was Revillame's motive, did the boy say that he felt pressured to dance and what was it about the basketball player that made him cry.

'Idol' accused of weight bias; show denies claim

This story caught my attention by the very headline. A scandal from a show as big as American Idol would be a huge story if it were truly the case. The story is about a girl who made a complaint about being denied a front row seat during an American Idol filming on the grounds of her weight. The fact of the matter is that she was part of a group who were all promised really good seats, and hers just happened to be a few rows farther away from the stage.

The lead is a basic summary lead that answers Who, What, Where, and Why. The When gets answered during the story. News values include Prominence, Novelty, Conflict, Emotion, and Immediacy.

Alabama budget cuts to close 3 satellite crime labs http://blog.al.com/wire/2011/04/alabama_budget_cuts_to_close_3.html

I chose this particular story because it shows how budget cuts are even affecting solving crimes. It is sad when you have to cut programs that are heping keep society safe.

News values include: impact- this is affecting how crimes are solved and how quickly criminals are taken off the streets. immediacy: this is going to happen this year. Proximity: one of the crime labs that is closing is the one in Florence, which I believe to be the one on campus.

The lead works in this story. It tells what, when, why, and the relative where (Alabama).

Some questions that are left unanswered are, how frequently were these specific labs used? This question would help clear up any uncertainty of safety and crime-solving. Also, what technilogy was available in these specific facilities? Were there any pieces of technology that other labs did not have? What will happen with all that equipment?

Gingrich Foundation Recognizes Girl Scouts of the USA

WASHINGTON, D.C., March 2 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- In honor of Women's History Month, the Gingrich Foundation has selected Girl Scouts of the USA as its Charity of the Month for March.

Girl Scouts of the USA has become a premier leadership experience for young women since its founding in March 1912 when founder Juliette "Daisy" Gordon Low saw the need to mentor and encourage girls to embrace their talents and make their mark on the world.

Today, 2.3 million girls in the United States, from kindergarten to high school, participate in Girl Scouting, composing part of a worldwide family of 10 million Girl Scouts and Girl Guides across 145 countries. Girl Scouts of the USA has a total of 3.2 million members, including adult volunteers.

"Our family has been actively involved in the Girl Scouting program for many years," said Callista Gingrich, President of the Gingrich Foundation. "Girl Scouts of the USA provides an opportunity for girls to develop courage, confidence, and character. We are pleased to recognize the Girl Scouts of the USA as Charity of the Month and encourage others to join us in supporting their valuable efforts."

"Support for Girl Scouts provides tremendous opportunities for girls to reach their leadership potential making the country and world a better place. We are grateful to the Gingrich family and Foundation for supporting Girl Scouts and choosing our work as the Charity of the Month."

Girl Scouting underscores the importance of respect and responsibility - of honing a girl's courage, strength, and honesty. Girl Scouts of the USA places a strong emphasis on academics, encouraging young girls to develop an early appreciation for academic excellence and lifelong learning.

The Gingrich Foundation is a domestic non-profit corporation founded by Callista and Newt Gingrich to support charitable purposes.

Gotcha! Elephant Caught Cheating

I chose this particular story for my bizarre beat because I figured we all needed to hear a fun story instead of another depressing story on Japan...

This story is interesting AND adorable. Its is about testing the itellegence of elephants and their abilities towork together. The elephants in the study were smart enough to work as a team but one was even smart enough to cheat.

The lead for this story really works in my opinion. It is very playful, much like the story itself. There is no need to get down to the hard facts in the begining.

The news value this story contains is purely novelty. There is nothing really profound or impactful. Its just a fun novelty story.

As far as follow up on this story goes, I'm not sure. Maybe more on how fast the elephants picked up the skill or how far along in the study did the one elephant learn to cheat?

Steve Jobs Unveils iPad 2 at Apple Event

Apple CEO Steve Jobs briefly emerged from his medical leave and walked on stage to a standing ovation Wednesday to unveil the second generation of the popular iPad, which will go on sale March 11 in the U.S.

Jobs looked frail as he appeared in his signature black mock turtleneck, blue jeans and wire-rimmed glasses.

"We've been working on this product for a while, and I just didn't want to miss today," Jobs said. "Thank you for having me."

The next-generation tablet computer has a faster processor than the original iPad's. As expected, it comes with two cameras for taking photos and video chatting. The battery life will be the same as the original about 10 hours of usage and a month on standby.

The iPad 2 is also thinner — 8.8 millimeters instead of the current 13.4 millimeters.

"The new iPad 2 is actually thinner than your iPhone 4," Jobs said.

The original iPad, which burst onto the scene last April, was more popular than analysts imagined. Apple sold 15 million in nine months.

I chose this story because the iPad is a BIG deal when it comes to technology today. The news values are entertainment, and reference to important persons. This lead works perfectly. This story is about both Steve Jobs and the iPad and the lead is written to include both.

The end of Space Age...

Today marks the final landing for the 27 year-old Discovery space shuttle. The near ceremonial event occurred at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Missions on the Discovery began in 1984, and total up 365 days worth of time spent amongst the Earth's atmosphere. The Discovery was the first of three shuttles to be retired this year, but among the trio it is the longest active. The final mission the Discovery performed involved transporting a storage room and supply to the International Space Station. NASA officials are to make a decision next month on where the retired shuttle will rest and be on display.

Why teach for America Works

Why Teach For America Works
The organization, whose goal is to "eliminate inequality in schools," hasn't survived without controversy. Many complain about the short training period that new teachers receive -- just five weeks. TFA teachers sign a two-year commitment and receive the same salary and benefits as teachers with a master's in education. Some union teachers have filed lawsuits to curtail the program, saying they are being "squeezed out of jobs."

Teach for America works because the program hires strong teachers, according to Andrew Rotherham, New York Times educational columnist, Eduwonk blogger, and educational consultant at Bellwether Education. He acknowledges that the program is not fail-proof, but says the teachers hired through TFA do as well or better than the average teacher in a similar high-poverty school. "And I think this has less to do with the Teach for America, per se, than just the generally poor quality of teacher selection and teacher preparation. What you're really seeing, I think, in the data, is that Teach for America does a good job in a field that largely does a bad job."

He explains that the method through which people become teachers in the US is problematic. "Abundant research shows the route into teaching is less important than the candidate," Rotherham says. "And considering the amount of money we put into teacher licensure and teacher preparation, we need to be talking about a much different way of doing this. Policies are really disconnected from what we know from the research right now."

Many of the complaints about the Teach for America program are actually general complaints about starting a career in teaching. Teach for America teachers leave the field at the same rate as the average teacher in the same high-poverty school district.

Rotherham continues the parallel:

Teachers in general say they don't get enough support in their first couple years. The common surveys show this again and again. This is irrespective of route. They traditionally get the hardest assignments because of the way seniority works. So, you're coming into it, you're not well supported, and you're often getting the most challenging students and situations within a school. So, TFA's programs, I think, and their initiatives are admirable.

Rotherham would like to see the "quite evidently deranged" experiment taken further:

What would happen if you coupled TFA's selection model with even more ambitious training, more ambitious supporProxy-Connection: keep-alive

Is MTV showing too much skin?

I chose this story because the focus is viewers mostly 12-34 years old. And how it possibly affects that age group and demographic.

The lead was well done it gave me the basic rundown of what i was going to read.

News value boils down to impact. The show itself may have an impact on the children, teenagers and young adults. The story itself may have an impact on how those who have never watched the show. And may have a strong opinion from those who are extremely protective of there children.

There could be a follow up story of possible politicians or moms who speak against.

Wake Up To Your Sleep Deficit, America!

I chose this story because of its relevance to my life as a full-time college student who rarely gets the healthy amount of sleep at night. The writer referenced a recent survey conducted by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention that asked 75,000 people about their sleep habits. One-third of the people surveyed had slept less than 7 hours the previous night, and 38 percent of that group had unintentionally fallen asleep at least once during the last month. Of that group, 5 percent admitted to nodding off at the wheel. Scary.

There are several news values at work in this story. Impact and proximity are both present. The need for rest is universal to all people. If people are not getting enough sleep, not only are they less effective at their jobs, and less sociable, they are a danger to themselves and others. The statistics about people falling asleep at their cars is unsettling to readers, for this reason, the value of emotion is also evident in the story.

The structure of the article was somewhat confusing at first. The author did not begin his story with a lead that summarizes the story, but instead opened with a statement that his story was an exception to one of his rules. I would have preferred for him to simply introduce the article with a summary. Other than that, I found the article to be well-written. The author utilized the survey statistics well, and provided other useful statistics and comments as well.

A possible follow-up to the story may be when new statistics are released on this information. Perhaps the statistics about sleep deprivation that may be related to the recent time change because of Daylight Savings Time.

Europe's plan to aid North Africa toward democracy

This news story comes from the Public Radio International about two weeks ago, covering Europe's response toward the warring countries of North Africa. The anchor says a few things like how theses African countries have been Europe's close neighbor so they need to help them reach stability through democracy, and that Europe needs to change the way it provides for North Africa as fund to the countries only end up in the hands of corrupt leaders.
Of course there is conflict in North Africa right now, but I think the news values lean more toward emotions, because here is Europe stepping in to try and help North Africa, and that makes me as a reader very impressed to see that something is being done to help.
The lead uses some powerful verbs describing the condition in North Africa by refering to it as a 'wave of unrest', and the does well to direct the point of the story.

First Listen: R.E.M., 'Collapse Into Now'

As REM is one of my favorite bands of the '80s and '90s, I simply had to post a story about their upcoming album. Over the years, REM has released some very good music and inspired many of my favorite bands.

The article itself contains two main news values: Prominence in the importance of REM as an influential alternative rock band and Immediacy in the fact that their new album comes out on Tuesday, March 8. The lead gives some good background information about the band but doesn't mention anything about the new album. I don't think any questions are left unanswered.

Storms rip through Tornado Valley...

Monday afternoon brought severe storms to areas ranging between Ohio and Florida. The precipitation was overwhelming for some counties located in low areas. Northwest Ohio was somewhat under water in select communities. Some were well prepared by placing walls of sandbags to help block the excessive water flow. The storm also took the lives of four in the state of Tennessee. Those living in counties affected by the storms are accustomed to such weather, but know there is little they can do.

2 US Airmen Killed, 2 Wounded

http://www.npr.org/2011/03/02/134195467/two-killed-in-attack-on-bus-carrying-u-s-military

2 U.S. Airmen were attacked and killed on a bus outside of Terminal 2 at the Frankfurt Airport in Germany. The gunman attacked and killed two and wounded two others before he was brought down by officials. Many U.S. troops are based out of Germany and operate in Afghanistan and Iraq. U.S. Officials say it could be a possible terrorist attack though German and Kosovo officials are not convinced of so.

I picked this article because it was a major headline on the NPR site and pertains to our soldiers that are thought of as safe as long as they aren't in Iraq or Afghanistan. The news values in this article are Novelty (didn't expect an attack in Germany), Impact (the loss of more soldiers and the effect it has on their families'), Immediacy (though it doesn't say the exact time, it wouldn't be a major headline if it was old news), and Conflict (that one is obvious).

Retired government employees in Prichard, Ala. are not getting their pension payouts becuase the funds have gone dry.

1. I chose this story because it shows that even if your promised a retirement pension, you should still save money.
2. Proximity- this is happening in Alabama. Impact- this has to do with people's money (or lack of) if your planning to work for the government, this is important to keep in mind.
3. The leade works, it tells who and what, which are the most imprtant items of the story.
4. Qestion I have are: what is going to happen to these people? Are the funds going to start flowing again?

Obama's Fight to Raise Education Budget

http://www.npr.org/2011/02/15/133768981/Obamas-Budget-Calls-For-More-Spending-On-Education

I chose this story because it made me realize that although the president may promise to fight for education buget increases, the likely hood of it actually happening is slim because of who opposes him.

The news values of this story are:

1. Impact: this will impact the education of the students in America, 2. Prominence: President Barack Obama is important in the story, and 3. Conflict: there is a conflict between what Obama wants and what congress wants.

The lead answers the who, what, and why. The two other W's are answered later in the story.

BP, the company forever ruining the ecosystem.

Even though a year has gone by after that terrible BP oil spill, there are still several inches of oil coating the floor of the Gulf of Mexico. The harm caused to those creatures that call the gulf their habitat is overwhelming for activist to understand. Bottom feeders of the ocean have essentially been removed from their homes, or better yet, killed. Experts, or the government, believe the gulf spill would be completely cleaned up by the year 2012. Others are saying the total impact of what the oil spill actually did will finally be realized by 2012.

4 American Hostages Killed by Pirate off Somalia

I heard this story today on CNN, and looked here to find it again, so I decided to blog about it. It's a frightening and sad story of a hostage situation on the Somalian gulf where the victims did not stand a chance when attacked by pirates.
There seem to be a combination of news values here, the first being conflict because we see more trouble with pirates coming from the Somalian seas; the next immediacy because it just happened today; and the last is proximity because even though it takes place far away, the story involves people from America.
The lead here does not seem to summarize the point of the story as it instead tells about what caused the crew on the destroyer to jump on and fight back against the pirates.
I think some questions that need to be answered are what will the U.S. and Somalian governments do to keep the waters and the people who sail them safe from another pirate raid such as this, especially in response to the threats that the pirates give and the tactics they revealed.

Hee Haw Show earns state honors

McNairy County’s Hee Haw Show has been honored with the Sapphire Award by the American Cancer Society for their outstanding contribution to the fight against cancer.
The Hee Haw Show was started in 1987 and has run continuously since then to help raise funds to battle cancer. Mr. George Souders, a popular McNairy County teacher, directed the very first show and there’s been no stopping them since.
The show raised over $20,000 for the American Cancer Society this year and is consistently one of West Tennessee’s largest fundraisers.
Many cast members have been in almost every show, including Joe Dan Maness, Randy Fowler, Kaye Tacker, Dwight and Freda Locke, Amelia Young, and Brian Dickey.
The family of Dorothy King, including Johnny B. and Wilma Dunaway, and Shirley Moore, have provided refreshments for every show. Dorothy lost her battle with cancer in 1996, but her family continues to honor her by continuing the tradition that she started.
Please come out this March and help show your appreciation to this cast and crew for their many contributions to this battle against cancer.

Global Warming? Really?

This story had me from the "Credence" quote. Studies are showing who causes the rain instead of who can stop it. The author further goes to state that the increasing amounts of rainfall and snow are caused by human sources. Although there are not significant differences of when it rains, there are differences in how much it rains. Scientist are trying to pin the blame of the increased rainfall on humanity, when in fact there is little to be done to resolve the issue.

Drug Gang Shot U.S Agents

This story is about two US agents that got shot in Mexico by men who are in a gang. One of the agents is now dead and the other is wounded.

This story caught my attention because its was a drug gang related issue. This story is novelty. Im sure it happens a lot, but it still catches attention that gang attack would randomly happen to agents who are minding their own business. It shows that when we least expect it, bad things can happen.

The lead of this story very effective. It tells who, what, and where. The why is described later in the story. The lead makes readers want to read more to know exactly why the shootings happened.

There are some unanswered questions about the whole incident. Mexico's officials are being sketchy towards the incident saying that it was probably just a mistake. The US is going to have to evaluate the situation.

http://www.florala.net/ara/education/article_402b6b6d-4f3a-5184-af8b-4d89964364e8.html

This story is about online education, and how it is becoming more popular for students. It discusses how online education is rapidly growing and what some of the advantages are.
1. I think this news lead is just a basic news lead. It answers the WHO, WHAT, and WHY.
2. I think this story has two news values, impact and proximity. This story reveals the impact online education can have on students lives. Also, because this story was done by the "Flor-Ala," this story has proximity because it deals directly with college students.
What I think the story could have included is how this will impact high school seniors who are about to go to college. Is this going to increase the number of students who start working as soon as they graduate and get their degree at the same time? Also, should highschools start incorporating their own online courses to prepare students for the future?

Much Needed Care Leads to Recovery.

This story told about a dolphin that washed ashore in New Orleans. After the oil spill in the Gulf this summer, there were hundreds of thousands of animals left ill. The dolphin mentioned in the story washed up in New Orleans nearly dead. Animal Rescuers took the dolphin to an uncontaminated area and nursed it back to health. The animal was very under sized for it's age, and was completely covered in oily, slimy water. After two short weeks the dolphin was able to eat on its own and was able to swim unassisted. This dolphin is one of sixty-two in this condition, but all are having rapid recoveries.

Man Found Slain

A 35 year old man was found slain Sunday inside his home in Phenix City, AL. There were multiple gunshot wounds which the autopsy found as the cause of death. Police are still trying to piece together what happened to the man.

This story is more of proximity because it happened in Alabama in a smaller city. People usually do not expect murders to happen unless its in a bigger city like Birmingham or Montgomery.

I would say the lead of this story is effective. It states the W's which brings people to wanna read more about what happened to the man and what the police plan on what to do about the mystery shooting.

As soon as I can find more information on the man and the shooting, I will post it. Hopefully, police will find the murdered and piece together what happened.

Bodies found in melting snow

There's been a lot of snow news about all the blizzards hitting the nation, but this story is a little more bizarre than most. And quite disturbing...

1. I chose this story because it's relevant to a lot of areas in the country with all the recent snow. We may not have found any dead bodies in the snow piles, but we have had snow piles!
2. The news value this story contains would be Novelty. It's definitely odd and surprising. It's not every snow-day you find a dead body in the snow. Another possible news value this story contains would be Emotions. Later in the article, residents talk about how the streets were filthy from poor street clean up and management. There was a lot of anger about the conditions.
3. I think this Scene-Setter Lead is great for catching the reader's attention. It talks about how the snow is finally melting-- only to reveal a mess of trash and even dead bodies.
4. Unanswered Questions/Follow-up: What is the city planning to do about clean-up?

Some Animal Activists call for sled dog boycott after canadian slaughter

 http://travel.usatoday.com/destinations/dispatches/post/2011/02/animal-activists-call-for-sled-dog-boycott-after-canadian-slaughter/142221/1

I chose this originally because of its title and i couldn't find anything from my own beat that was interesting.

Alhtough the lead itself did not explain enough i believe to give me a basic outline of what its about.

News value is its impact on dog lovers and animal activists. Also Proximity the Euthanize of a lot of animals could impact jobs.

A company that bases its sales on sled dog tours. Decided since the year was slot to euthanize 100 to 300 dogs.Animal activists who caught wind decided to boycott the company who did tours through Canada.

The Actual lead mentioned boycott of sled tours not anything about animal killing.

There very well could be a follow up on the company and how they may handle this in the future. Possibly giving the dogs away. And if the boycott affected the company.

I'm sure we've all been up to our eyeballs in news about The Civil Wars lately, but here's just another little bit. I stopped and looked at this article out of jealousy for not getting to go to either of the performances at the Zodiac Theater. The biggest news value here is definitely Proximity since singer/guitarist John Paul White is a Shoals area native. Followup stories will likely include chart progress for The Civil Wars' album and single Barton Hollow. As far as the article itself is concerned, I didn't like that the lead (talking about the concerts and band background) didn't really follow the headline (about the chart success).

Trailer park laughs with, not at stereotypes

I just found it funny that a musical is coming to town about a white trash family and they are having to defend themselves so people don't take offense to this.

2 Injured After Explosion at Redstone Arsenal

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/05/05/national/main6462795.shtml
This article is about 2 men being injured severely on the Arenal Wednesday while working on the Rockets that had been tested on the site.
I chose this artice because even though 2 men were injured, it highlights our Redstone Arsenal as the premier testing site for the Army.
This article has Proximity, The Arsenal is only an hour awhile. And Impact, our soldiers are just as easily put in harms way here as they are overseas.

Acting against abuse Amelia Young

In the early 1960's Nashville's David Brown was sexually abused by a priest he considered to be a mentor.
After the abuse he went from being a straight A student and wanting to become a priest to a life of drugs and alcholol. Brown was on panel disscussing child sex abuse in the church Thursday during a workshop in Jackson.
It took more than 35 years to tell anyone else what happend . He then felt betrayed by the response he got from the bishop after Brown said he wanted the public to know.

Locals considering security after public violence

http://www.timesdaily.com/article/20110207/APN/1102071173/-1//apps/pbcs.dll/frontpage?nocache=1

1) I chose this particular story because it shows what kind of an impact recent events (shootings at government meetings) have had on cities in Alabama.

2)This story has impact, in light of recent, tragic events, safety is of the utmost concern for everybody. Proximity- its in Alabama. Prominence is involved with the story revolving around the Dothan city council (public figures).

3) The lead did not work at all. It seemed like a bunch of fluff, and was not straight and to the point. It only told who and a partial where.

4) An unanswered question is, how much is all this extra security going to cost?

Educational Funding Face Possible Cuts

This article is from my hometown news paper called the Daily Mountain Eagle. This article addresses the possibility of a 10 percent cut to education funding, and the concern that students will still receive adequate education. This article has news values such as impact, immediacy, proximity, conflict, and emotions. As a future educator, this could affect my chances of a job should I choose to locate in my home town. Also, I have been observing in the schools in Walker County, and they are already suffering from lack of funding. More cuts could severly hurt the teachers chances of incorrporating current technology in the classroom. I was personaly alarmed by this article, and hope that the paper follows up on the process of this potential calamity.

Egypt's Fate Rests on Top Soldiers' Shoulders

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/41392316

This article gives praise to Egyptain Lt. Gen. Enan for his work with U.S. troops to ensure the end to the violent protests in Egypt. The protests will hopefully end soon with Marburak stating that he will not look to be Re-elected in September; the doing of Enan.

I chose this article because not often do you hear of U.S. Troops refusing to use force against violent middle eastern protestors. More so, because of the promise of an Egyptian official.

The news values are Immediacy (as of Monday), Prominence being our U.S. Troops, Novelty being the solution to the situation, and Emotion being that it gives a breath of hope that progress is being made over in Egypt.

Don't Drink the Sink Water...

http://content.usatoday.com/communities/greenhouse/index

I feel this article is relevant because the tap water being consumed by American citizens is filled with hazardous chemicals. The chemicals which are found in the water can be linked to thyroid problems associated with pregnant mothers and their newborns. The writer of this article further proclaims that the chemicals posing as the biggest threat comes from the exhaust of spaceships. President Obama has revised the action to be taken as the initial plan was introduced during the Bush administration. The goal of this plan is to make the water being consumed by our nation cleaner and less likely to cause birth defects. Although this is to be a slow process it will benefit us as Americans within the next few years.

Bath Salts: The new designer drug?

They've done it again! The kids have found a new, and legal, way to get high-- bath salts. It sounds crazy but apparently you can buy this stuff over the counter or online. No medical card needed...

1. I chose this story because of how fast this trend seems to be catching on. And for the bizzare factor. It's just bath salt you can buy in a store, completely legal, but also potentially fatal.
2. This story displays quite a few news values. Impact: This is a widespread trend. It could effect parents having to watch their children even more closely; it could effect the vendors who sell it; it could effect people who love taking baths! Proximity: More than likely, this product is sold in a couple of places in your town. Novelty: This is definitely a little crazy. Something like bath salts causing dangerous highs and suicidal thoughts? Unexpected. Emotions: Kids and adults are dying from over dose and other effects of this new designer drug. It's scary and sad.
3. Since this is actually a video news clip (I saw the story on video but I couldnt find it in print), I'm not positive on how to grade the effectiveness of the lead. If it were in print though, I would still say it was effective. The element of "Ooo what is it?" and mystery get me wanting to listen to the rest when the anchor opens with "There is a new drug on the streets and its not what you might think. And it's legal".
4. What are authorities planning to do about it? When will they be able to take action concerning laws against the sale of certain bath salts?

Nonessential US gov't staff begin to leave Egypt

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110202/ap_on_re_mi_ea/egypt_evacuations

I choose this story because I feel not enough people truly understand the effect this outcome will have on Americans futures. The evacuation only shows how serious the issue is and I feel that more news coverage is needed. I'm still waiting to hear about full blown riots in the near future.

Trial date set for Alabama man accused of killing wife on honeymoon

http://www.cnn.com/2011/CRIME/02/01/alabama.honeymoon.case/index.html?iref=allsearch

1) I chose this story because its not every day that a man kills his wife on a honeymoon, and the couple is from Birmingham, Alabama.

2) The news values are: immediacy (the trial was set on the 1st of February), proximity (it will take place in Birmingham), novelty (it is crazy that this is happening 5 years after the wife died, and he spent time in an Australia jail, and got remarried), and emotions (this makes me feel sad and angry that people can do this, and it takes so long to get them in court.)

3) The lead definitely worked, because it comes as a relief to know that this man will hopefully be held accountable for his actions.

4) There were no questions left unanswered, and this is a follow up story to an incident that happened 5 years ago.

Lindsey Lohan: Back at it Again

Lindsey Lohan Suspected Jewelery Theft

For starters, I know this isn't typically something to think about when the word "crime" comes to mind; however, stealing is a still a crime. I personally found it an entertaining piece because Lindsey Lohan is a wreck and somehow ALWAYS makes it in the news, that is, if you would even call it "news". I guess people enjoy seeing her in magazines/papers and television because it makes people feel better about their own lives? People love knowing that there is someone else out in the world that is more messed up than them.

Supposedly, Lohan stole a $2,500 dollar necklace. Of coarse she is denying it; Lohan is always in some sort of trouble or mishap. Another charge on her record is the last thing she needs. Why anyone would want to spend $2,500 on a necklace is beyond me; stealing it is even worse. Knowing Lohan and her bad fashion since, the necklace probably wasn't even cute or worth all this mess this has got her in.

This story is a prime example that even the smallest of things that do not overall affect average peoples lives can be made in to a story and called "news". Stories like these are solely to entertain and give us insight on celebrities and their messed up lives.

Boehner: U.S. Will Not Default on Debt, But Congress Will Slash Spending

The United States will not default on its obligations, but must reduce spending at the same time it raises its debt limit, House Speaker John Boehner said Sunday. Now that the house is Republican-led there are going to be many changes happening. For example, they are demanding a debt limit in order to make sure that the federal government will never go on a spending spree again. The current debt is rising by $4 million a day.

Songwriter Amos Lee gets personal in new album

I think this story deserves attention out of a personal love for up-and-coming musicians. Amos Lee comments in an interview about the intimacy of his newest album Morning Bell. He also talks about how he's not worried about mainstream success, a statement easy enough to make after being heavily commended by country music legend Willie Nelson.

The story has some immediacy with the album's release last month and has prominence in the presence of Willie Nelson and Lucinda Williams on the album. A followup story might include news about Lee's upcoming tour promoting the album.

http://www.cnn.com/2011/SHOWBIZ/Music/01/18/amos.lee.soundcheck/index.html

Demands for Change in Egypt

I chose this story because Egypt is a hotspot in the world right now as this incredible protest continues as somewhere around 225,000 people are demanding current President Mubarak to leave the country and allow free elections to carry on. Also it is said in this story how the military refuses to attack against any further,
The news value involved in this revolves around conflict as this disupute began about a week ago where protestors demanded the president end his thirty year administration.
One follow up I found after reading this article is how the president declarees that he actually will not run for president again, however did not say that he will not give up his power.

86 Pregnant Teens!!!

I chose this particular story because the fact that 86 girls were pregnant at one high school is ridiculous! I know that in the past sex education has been a topic of controversy, but I feel this proves the need for sex education in the schools.

The news values of this piece would be:

1. Impact: Many times teen girls who have babies are not at the maturity level needed to take care of that baby. This causes them to go on well fare which comes out of our tax dollars.

2. Novelty: It is very shocking for 86 girls to be pregnant in one school.

I feel that the lead worked because it captured my attention.

I was not left with any unanswered questions about this article. It did say that the school is making efforts to prevent this from being so common in the school.

Power House Movie "King's Speech" Wins Overall Cast

http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2011/01/30/kings-speech-wins-overall-cast-sag-awards/

I chose this story because it may show the direction of where the votes for the Oscars are going to go.

News Value. This is considered public interest and I would say immediacy seeing as the awards where last night. This will affect those with interest.

Lead is well done gave a good outline of what i was about to read.

It will have a follow up story when it comes to the next upcoming awards.

Murdoch's iPad newspaper The Daily to launch Feb. 2

I chose this story because we've talked a lot about the ipad and it's influence over media. We also talked about how newspapers, the tangible kind, are becoming less and less popular over time. This story is merely public interest, as with most technology stories. It affects only those people who own or will own an ipad, as well as people working at newspapers. Soon, after the release of the paper, we hope to see a follow up story on the effect of this paper on other papers and how well the paper actually sells.

Reminders!

Just a reminder to read over your classmates' blog posts from last week. We'll have an in-class quiz next week about those stories posted.

Be sure to review the news values on page 19 for these blog posts! Some of you said in the blog post that you didn't understand what I meant by "news values." They're listed on that page. I'll likely ask you to identify the news values in those stories posted on the blog.

Keep in mind that you'll do another blog for Wednesday, Feb. 2. This time, look for a story from a national TV news website, such as CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, etc.

If you blogged a story from one of those types of media last week, then look for a story from a national newspaper instead.

Got questions? Shoot 'em my way. You've also got a discussion board homework assignment DUE BY CLASSTIME MONDAY.

Happy weekend!

USDA Calls for Dramatic Change in School Lunches

http://www.usatoday.com/yourlife/food/diet-nutrition/2011-01-12-schoollunch13_ST_N.htm?loc=interstitialskip

I chose this story because the issue at hand is not as simple as one may think. While it is obvious that the United States should take steps to improve the health of its citizens, especially its children, many argue that there is a fine line between providing healthier options for children, and forcing it upon them.

The impact of this story is not necessarily universal, but it is far reaching. A great deal of Americans have families with children in public schools. The proposed rule will affect these families; and if the rule has its intended effect, then it will have a lasting impact on the nutritional lifestyle of the children. Proximity is also in effect, not because this rule was made nearby, but because of its universal nature, it will affect all the schools in the country.

This article simply states the facts of the case, and it does not delve too deeply into the other issues. Agriculture Secretary, Tom Vilsack did address the issue of the government regulating what people eat, saying that the intent is not to "dictate" what children eat, but simply help parents to give their children a chance to be as "healthy, happy, productive, and successful as God intended them to be." The article does not contain a positive or negative reaction from the parents, but the Department of Agriculture is asking for input at a public comment period ending April 13.

A possible follow up to this story could be about the input from the public in April.

Social networking leads to sex faster?

My beat is Bizarre News so I figured this would be a great one to start with... Haha

I mean, what college student's mind isn't on sex anyway? And if its not on sex, is it on Facebook? Or texting that special guy or girl back? Probably. And if so, this story intrests you.

Most hormone-driven, 20-somethings probably would have clicked on this link first simply because it has the word 'sex' in it. It's immediately interesting to this age group- one reason why I picked it.

The main news value it displays is Novelty. It's something racy and intriguing and a little bit taboo. The other news value that could attract readers is Prominence. It doesn't deal with a famous person but it does deal with a famous site we all know very well- Facebook. Proximity is another possible news value in the story. It hits home; everyone with opposable thumbs has a cell phone.

I'm not exactly sure what quallifies as unanswered questions, or if this story has any. And follow up could just be a study on comparing the sex lives of induviduals without any form of social networking (if that person exists!).

U.S. Roadside bomb casualties Skyrocket in Afghanistan

http://www.foxnews.com/world/2011/01/26/roadside-bomb-casualties-rise-afghanistan/#

I chose this particular article because very rarely do we actually have the numbers of deaths and injuries presented in this form. In 2010, more troops were killed and injured overseas than in any year since the attacks of 9/11. This article raises question as to "why now?" after all the years over there. To me, this has a lot of news value because my brother just got back from Afghanistan and still has friends over there as well as a number of my high school buddies merely halfway through their tour. The pentagon has ensured the safety of ther soldiers by sending over a significant amount of bomb detectors, sensors, un-manned recon units, etc. But what the article doesn't say that friends and family serving over there have is that in some instances, soldiers will be sent out driving along the roads "waiting" to be attacked as so to slowly pick off the high number of insurgents. A lot of times at the cost of our U.S. Soldiers..

Snow Showers from the Southern States to New England.

http://www.usatoday.com/weather/storms/winter/2011-01-26-storm26_ST_N.htm

As this story goes to show, some could feel as if Al Gore is as truthful about global warming as he was about inventing the internet. The weather conditions for the majority of the southern states have been more extreme than those of our generation have ever experienced. Cold weather has been an ongoing occurrence for most of the country and has been the contributing factor to the halt of travel. Also, there were several school closings today ranging from northern regions of our state, to areas of New Hampshire. I found this story relevant because the majority of the people who surround me are just as fed up with the climate as I am. Another valid point has to do with the school closings that are mentioned in this story because we ourselves were postponed due to ice and snow this morning. This story is just another significant sign that we are in the coldest part of the winter, and although no one wants to accept the fact, we still have about three more months of this to go.
I wanted to know if there was anything specific that The New York Times had on the Philippines because this is the country where I grew up in, and very surprised to here of an explosion that occured in the capitol city of Manila and the aftermath. The reporters gave straight out facts and got quotes from those who experienced the explosion and also from Philippine President Aquino who made a strong response to what looks like a terrorist attack. It looks like the news is updated from yesterday when I read it because I noticed the title of the story states that two were killed in the explosion, but yesterday in the story there were said to be four killed, and today it says there are five. The link is below:

http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2011/01/25/world/asia/AP-AS-Philippines-Bus-Explosion.html?_r=1&ref=asia

4 Prostitutes Found Dead

I chose this story because it really caught my eye. Murders are very common, but it is rare to hear of 4 prostitutes getting murdered. It is interesting what the 4 girls had in common too; each of the were advertised on Craiglist. I found this story very bizarre because it seems that the person doing the killing is a serial killer. In my opinion, these murders sound like the Craiglist Killer that surfaced a little over a year ago;however, its strange that the bodies the police found could have been in that location for as long as 2 years. Police do not have any strong leads towards to who the killer may be and are offering $5,000 reward for any information pertaining towards the murders.

Large Scale Fire Damages 3 Homes

http://blog.al.com/live/2011/01/large-scale_fire_damages_3_hom.html

1) I chose this story because it was a tragedy, and as bad as it sounds, we find these types of stories interesting.
2) The news values that were used are: impact (on the owners of the houses and those worried about arson), immediacy 9just happened this morning at 3), and emotions (losing a house is tragic)
3) The lead worked because it summed up the entire incident in just a few sentences.
4) The two quetions that went left unanswered were 1, how did the fire start, and 2, if it was arson, are there any peices of evidence on who it was

my 1st blog ever!!! woohoo, i guess???

I chose this story because, really it was the 1st one I came to, but also I like dogs. As far as what news values were used, i'm not sure what you wanting here, but i'm going to guess they were after that shock value. When you read a piece like this, you think to yourself, "who would do this to an animal". I also think this is a good human intrest story about how the SPAC came in and saved the life of all those helpless dogs. I'm assuming the follow up story is going to be about the lawsuit she plans on filing against the SPCA.

`The King's Speech' usurps throne as Oscar leader

This story stood out to me because of the dramatic change in the Oscar race that it causes. The King's Speech, a historical drama about King George VI, seems to be a strange film to be leading in nominations over Golden Globe favorite The Social Network, a film more immediately relevant in today's Facebook-addicted culture.

The story is quite immediate, being published this morning following the Oscar nominations' announcement yesterday. It also includes prominence in that Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, and Helena Bonham Carter, all Oscar-nominated actors, have been nominated for awards for their performances in the film.

As for unanswered questions, the only thing left is to see how the Academy Awards ceremony plays out on February 27.

I chose this particular story because it shocked me that registered sex offenders are being hired to teach in public schools due to the fact that back ground checks are not being done when school officials hire new teachers. This article reports many instances when sex offenders were hired to teach in public schools, and because of this, students were put in danger while in school. Although this article addresses the problem, I was left wondering what actions are being done or being considered in order to prevent sex offenders from being hired in public schools in the future. Children need to feel safe in the classroom, and not have to worry about whether or not the teacher is going to harm them in some way.

Oscar Nominations

1. I chose this story because this past year has had a great amount of wonderfully written, directed and acted films. This year is great to look forward to watching because also so many films, directors and actors not nominate.  Also so many are competing against a larger number.  For example last year five films competed for best picture, this year it has doubled including Toy Story 3. When some films getting more nominations then most others over the years most going for eight or more like the Lord of the rings trilogy. “King’s Speech” is going for 12 while” True Grit” is going for ten while “Inception” and “The Social Network” going for at least seven apiece.  When it comes to entertainment culture it will be something to remember especially for those actually in it and those who did not get nominated. It will be interesting to watch seeing that so many films were nominated for a lot of awards. Compared to recent years and this kind of thing in entertainment probably won’t happen again anytime soon.
2. When it comes to the actual newsworthy. Since it is entertainment a lot of people into movies will definitely be interested. Of course those who watched the movie “The Social Network”, about facebook  I am sure a lot of people will watch it from that alone. With most of America absorbed into entertainment I would say if on a scale of one to five. It could be worth a max of three.
3. The Follow up story will definitely be of the winners.  Only thing would be possibly getting information on why some actors get snubbed and not picked for nods.  But then again these are always hard to get information on he she would have to ask every voter on that board
